Also consider
Why the wrong category quietly costs you
Categories tell Google which searches you should show up for.
Picked once, never revisited
Categories chosen at signup often don't match the work you actually want more of.
Too broad
A generic category like Contractor competes with everyone and wins very few searches.
Missing the money service
Leave out a category like AC repair and you can miss the urgent searches that convert fastest.
How Google Business Profile categories work
Worth getting right before anything else on your profile.
What is a primary category?
It is the main description of your business on Google. It carries more weight than anything else you choose and shows under your name in search.
Pick the category that matches most of your revenue, not the one that sounds biggest.
What are additional categories for?
They help you show up for related searches. A roofer who also replaces windows can add Window installation service to appear for those searches.
Only add categories for work you actually do and want more of.
Do categories affect AI answers?
They help. AI assistants read your business listing when they decide who to name. Clear categories, a matching website and reviews that mention the service make you easier to recommend.
What if my trade has no exact category?
Pick the closest one, then use your services list, description and website to fill in the details. Permanent lighting is a good example: Lighting contractor plus clear service names usually works best.
Update your categories in three steps
Pick your trade above

Edit your profile
In your Google Business Profile, open Edit profile, then Business category, and add them.

Common questions about Google Business Profile categories
How many categories can I have on Google Business Profile?
One primary category and up to nine additional ones. The primary category matters most, so choose the one that matches most of your revenue.
Should I add every category that might apply?
No. Only add categories for services you actually sell. Extra categories that don't fit can make your profile less clear, and customers who find you for them won't convert.
How often should I change my primary category?
Rarely. Changing it can cause rankings to move around while Google re-evaluates the profile. Pick carefully, then leave it alone unless your business changes.
Why can't I find a category from this list?
Google adds, removes and renames categories over time. Type the name into your profile's category box and pick the closest match Google offers.
Do categories affect AI recommendations?
They help. AI assistants and Google use your categories as a quick signal of what you do. Clear categories plus a matching website and reviews make you easier to recommend.
